Author’s Note
This story was inspired by a line from the blog AI Weirdness written by Janelle Shane. She trained a neural network to write a first line of a novel.
The hook into my grey matter was the line “The sky was at the door.” I didn’t know what was going to happen or what I was going to write about. I simply copied that line to the top of a blank page and started writing.
This is what came out (heavily edited and re-written, of course).
