The Walls Have Ears

Author’s Note

This one started with the saying “the walls have ears” as a kind of literal non-pun in story form. A deliberate re-interpretation of what the saying actually means: that there might be someone nearby that could hear what you say, so you should say nothing at all.

Instead of a simple, one-note joke with a ‘twist’ ending, the story turned into something else as I wrote myself into the subjective reality of the narrator. By any objective analysis he has big problems, but what if he is telepathic? What if he is tuning into something that is stealing and spreading secrets? Whatever, his reality leaks through to the world in which he lives anyway, all you need to do is ask his victims.

Subjective realities are slippery customers that are overly reliant on egos to be trustworthy.
